The Roedean motto is "Inspiring a Life of Significance". This is a philosophy our community ascribes to and we believe that every child deserves the freedom to make her own unique mark on the world . . . . what ever that may be.
The Junior School encompasses a whole range of learning areas which creates a dynamic sense of energy and creativity. The cross curricular approach develops the skills of inquiry and research and empowers the girls to think and question both critically and independently. Our curriculum extends beyond the boundaries of numeracy and literacy to ethics and understanding of empathy, compassion and generosity of spirit. Our goal of education is no longer just mastery of subject matter in the curriculum but of one’s own person and how we live.
Our eco-curriculum and recycling and energy conservation initiatives reflect this focus in our daily lives at school. As teachers we also challenge ourselves in ensuring that our thinking and processes of transferring learning is both integrative and explanatory in our teaching style. The world of technology and fast access to knowledge is well balanced with extensive reading resources and a dynamic library and research facility.
Our core values “honour, truth, freedom and courtesy” are at the heart of every school and social relationship and form the vital core of the ethos of the school. This is evident in the development of sportsmanship and the many personal accomplishments of the girls whether it is in selection for a team, school or province. Our annual adventure camps at all levels are also vital in building the girls self confidence, encouraging girls to take risks to persevere, develop teamwork and leadership skills.
Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in the life of the school and the many and varied cultural and sporting activities. Our social relationship programme administered by a team of clinical psychologists and school counsellors proactively creates opportunities for parents and pupils to share and understand the value of friendships.
Music, art and drama are an integral part of the curriculum and girls have a range of opportunities to involve themselves and develop these skills. Plays, stage work, choir and music recitals as well as an annual art exhibition reflect the creativity and work ethic that sustains an individual aspiration to excellence.
