I find the comments from Ms Sibanda extremely alarming. Especially seeing that my child has been at this school since she was four and both of us are very happy. I need to state upfront that we're both African, as Ms Sibanda is implying that it is not possible for 'our kind' to be happy at this school. My daughter has progressed very well, not only personally and academically- but spiritually too. There's a library, art room, computer lab and other facilities. Activities range from art clubs to Karate classes. The girls have to do IsiZulu in the primary and intermediate phases and can opt to do either French and/or IsiZulu in High School. The cans of food that girls bring to school are for needy children. In addition, there is no 'racism' at the school. The school has been around for over 80 years, it has a great academic track record and if it was so terrible- South Africa's very vocal communities would have ensured that it did not survive that long. Over and above that, many of us as African parents would not be prepared to pay those very high fees just to subject our little ones to racism and disrespect. I think that everyone is entitled to their opinion but it is critical for one to base their comments on facts- which is not the case in what Ms Sibanda's review. This is rather unfortunate.
This school doesn't offer great activities at all, they have a lack of sports and no library. They do not offer any African languages (Zulu) and this is an important factor to schools in the country. I understand that the school itself is small but it shouldn't have to force learners to attend school functions-they shall do so at their own will. Attending these functions is havoc for learners who live far from the school and i should also point out that they are forced to bring cans of food if they do not attend these functions. The fact that they do not have a senior library is not acceptable, how are learners meant to study from book when there is a lack of them? They school needs to take black learners into consideration as there is a lack of respect towards them.
I sent my child to this school thinking there were great facilities but i was proved wrong, the only positive i can point out about this school is that the education is top form, however-I've taken my child out of this school as she deserves better than this school claims to offer.
St. Teresa's Mercy School Foundation Phase is the most wonderful school offering a secure, nurturing environment and a balanced curriculum that has seen my child flourish and grow in confidence. Thank you to Mrs. Orford and all the staff.
