As wonderful as it is to see them in all their uniformed glory, tearfully snapping a hundred pics of every second of that special morning's moment; your little nervous, smiling, hair-combed child will probably be just as nervous as you are.

School-readiness: Is my Child ready for Big School

We all know that one of the most difficult things we have to do as parents is make decisions for our children, especially when those decisions are being made when the child is very young. A big decision that we have to make early on is whether or not our child is ready for school and if so what school they should be attending. What makes this decision particularly difficult is that development in the early years is adaptable, with variation within normal development. Guidelines are provided for us, for example, the rule in South Africa is a child can go to school at 5 years old, providing they turn 6 by the end of June in grade one but it is compulsory for all children to enter school in the year they turn 7.
