Every year in the South Africa, nearly 60% of Grade 7 students, despite being fully eligible to attend High School, they are not ready for mainstream studies. In a normal circumstance after enrolling to a mainstream High School, these students learn that they must take remedial courses in English or mathematics etc. This gap between High School eligibility and High School readiness has attracted much attention in the last decade, yet it persists unabated. While access to High School remains a major challenge, Governments have been much more successful in getting students into High Schools than in providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to complete and obtain a national senior certificate. Even those students who have done everything they were told to do to prepare for High School find, often after they arrive, that their new institution has deemed them unprepared. Their High School Diploma and High School exit examination scores did not ensure College or Varsity entrance.
